About us

Since 1982, Isaacson, Miller has recruited for the leadership of the nation's civic infrastructure. We have approximately 200 employees, two-thirds of whom are search professionals, located in our Boston headquarters and in offices in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. We complete nearly 300 searches each year. Our clients include leading colleges and universities, foundations, human service agencies, research institutes, academic medical centers, economic development enterprises, arts and cultural groups, conservation and environmental organizations, and social justice and other national advocacy organizations. Almost all of our clients are not-for-profit organizations meeting demands of both mission and market.

We believe there are three features that distinguish us from other retained search firms.

Mission

The first is our focus upon mission. We seek exceptional leaders for important civic institutions. We are passionate and clear about our commitments, one of which is to understand and advance the aspirations that drive our clients. There is no search firm in the country that has conducted as many and as varied a range of searches in the independent sector as we have at Isaacson, Miller.

Diversity

The second distinguishing feature of our firm is our longstanding commitment to bringing women and people of color to senior management positions. For over 30 years we have established networks that support us in our efforts to build and present diverse pools of candidates. Over the life of the firm, 43% of our placements have been women and 23% have been people of color.

Craft

Third is our proficiency in the craft of search. We attend carefully to learning and understanding the unique strategic challenges and organizational cultures of our clients, to networking thoughtfully for candidates who may not currently be looking for a new position, and to interviewing and referencing our candidates in depth. We are careful to recruit broadly from all sectors - looking beyond traditional fields to for-profit, not-for-profit, and public institutions, seeking the most technically competent and mission-driven candidates who will fit the culture of our clients' organizations.

Many of our clients and past candidates become part of an extended network that shares our goal of strengthening the civic infrastructure. They see their own missions reflected in the work of the firm and choose to assist us, generously, in our quest for the finest talent in their fields.
