DIRECTOR / VETERANS RESOURCE CENTER

This position is responsible for coordinating all University services related to supporting military-affiliated students (veterans, active-duty service members and/or spouses and children of veterans) as well as overseeing the daily operations of the CMU Veterans’ Resource Center. This role requires maintaining awareness of evolving federal and state regulations that may impact military-affiliated students and recommending strategic solutions as needed.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in public administration, leadership, human services or a closely related field.
Three years of progressively responsible military education and leadership experience or a combination of experience in higher education and military leadership experience directly related to this position.
Experience in building partnerships, particularly with branches of the armed forces.
Experience in project management and coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders.
Experience serving in or directly working with one or multiple branches of the armed services.
Knowledgeable of Veterans Administration (VA) programs related to the use of educational benefits, vocational rehabilitation programs, and general services available to veterans and their families.
Proven knowledge of Federal Tuition Assistance and State Tuition Assistance programs.
Ability to be an effective, service-oriented campus leader committed to cultivating collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders while advocating on behalf of student veterans.
Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
Ability to project a positive and professional image.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree.
Prior work experience in a higher education environment while working with the student veteran population.
Experience interacting with military personnel/veterans.
Experience with an enterprise resource planning application, i.e., SAP, CRM.

Duties & Responsibilities
Coordinates and serve as the “one-stop” referral resource for University services and programs for students who are veterans, active duty service members, or for spouses and children of veterans.
Oversees the daily operation of the Veterans’ Resource Center including supervision of staff, and student workers, program budgeting, grants and private funding, compliance reporting, registration certification, and material requisitions.
Serves as the primary campus advisor to University administration, faculty, staff, students, and relevant others regarding VA education benefit programming and eligibility.
Represents the Veterans’ Resource Center on University committees and subcommittees.
Develops professional networks and partnerships/liaises with campus military entities and community Veteran/Military support organizations to include Veterans Affairs, ROTC, Wounded Warrior, and transition assistance programs.
Develops materials and facilitates training and professional development for administration, faculty, and staff on military/veteran student issues.
Increases veteran awareness on campus by creating outreach programs and publications.
Coordinates and develops survey methods designed to identify unique needs of the military and veteran student populations and works to provide mutually beneficial solutions to the student and University community.
Collaborates with Licensure, Regulatory Services, and Human Capital to research current and pending state or federal legislation and VA regulations. This includes informing University administrators on the potential impact to institutional policies and procedures as appropriate.
Monitors and evaluates organizational successes and implements strategic planning for changing organizational needs.
Collaborates with various CMU departments including Admissions and University Communications to promote efforts to establish and maintain the University’s position as a “military-friendly” institution for both current and prospective students.
Reviews University policies and procedures and makes recommendations based on where current policies or procedures may adversely impact accessibility to education programs for the veteran or military student population(s).
Coordinates military and veteran administrative services with other campus offices as required.
Advocates for students with issues related to their military experiences, veteran benefits, and student status (probation/suspension).
Performs other duties as assigned.
