As part of the dynamic Human Resources team at Charles River Community Health (CRCH), the Director of Employee Relations and Human Resources will play a critical role in cultivating talent and delivering people strategies in support of business objectives. This role oversees the retention lifecycles for the organization, including professional development, performance management, and employee relations.

Key responsibilities include overseeing onboarding and orientation, leading policy development and compliance efforts, managing employee lifecycle transitions, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance, supporting benefits administration and payroll collaboration, and providing strategic guidance in areas such as internal promotions, workforce reporting, retention strategy, and staff engagement. The Director of Employee Relations and Human Resources supervises HR Generalists and the Recruitment team, and works closely with managers, staff, SLT, and external stakeholders to move the mission forward, drive growth, and increase staff satisfaction and engagement.

Your Responsibilities

  • Manage the HR Generalist and Recruitment team by providing daily structure, clear direction, and support. Strengthen team capacity by streamlining workflows, clarifying responsibilities, and fostering collaboration.
  • Oversee all employee relations efforts from start to finish, including identifying trends and proactively addressing potential issues. Develop and recommend appropriate solutions, ensuring responses align with organizational policies and are applied consistently.
  • Serve as primary liaison for attorneys, and collaborate with the Senior Leadership teamand/or external legal counsel for complex employee relations matters.
  • Manage, communicate, and administer of 90-day and annual performance reviews for all staff. Use HR software to improve delivery, quality, and timely return rates of all reviews.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to communicate orientation day activities, ensuring an engaging transition for new team members into CRCH organizational culture.
  • Develop and administer 90-day new hire interviews, 30-day stay interviews for director-level and select manager roles, and exit interviews for all positions, compile data, and share with department heads and SLT recommended actions to improve talent, culture, and organization effectiveness.
  • Develop and present retention, turnover, and workforce status reports to department heads and SLT.
  • Manage internal promotion process including job description updates, interviewing, skills assessment, and aprove and process all paperwork for employee role/hours/status changes as well as employee separations.
  • Provide advice, coaching, resources, and development as needed for l managers in such areas as career development, progressive discipline, SMART goals, and holding teams accountable.
  • Oversee and manage the leave of absence and unemployment processes in partnership with the HR Generalist, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and CRCH policies.
  • Support the HR Generalist in tracking and processing timely payments for sign-on bonuses, retention bonuses, and scheduled compensation increases.
  • Collaborate with internal departments and the payroll partner to administer, track, and communicate the provider bonus program effectively.
  • Lead the development, revision, and interpretation of HR policies and the personnel handbook, ensuring clarity, compliance, and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Provide HR-related oversight for site visits, audits, and insurance renewals, maintaining compliance with requirements from CRCH’s key funders, including the Department of Public Health and HRSA.
  • Provide oversight to HR Generalist and partner with the COO to support benefits administration and Open Enrollment, including planning, communication, and execution.
  • Provide oversight for the development, execution, and ongoing management of provider contracts, ensuring alignment with organizational standards, timelines, and compliance requirements.
  • Provide oversight to HR Generalist who will serve as the primary liaison with the payroll partner, resolving payroll and HRIS-related issues.
  • Support the HR Generalist in identifying and recommending internal and community-based professional development opportunities to foster staff engagement, satisfaction, and growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the COO or designee.

Your Qualifications, Competencies, Traits

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 7 years of relevant experience, or a minimum of 10 years of directly related experience in lieu of a degree, required.
  • Minimum of five years of Human Resource operations experience across multiple disciplines, including talent acquisition, career development, workforce planning, performance management, and employee relations, required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, and consulting skills, with ability to influence, collaborate, and partner at all levels across the organization, required.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand business needs and develop strategic/practical solutions, with sound knowledge of applicable employment laws, regulations and business practices related to HR, required.
  • Must be highly organized with the capacity to manage work and priorities autonomously.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Payroll systems required.
  • Must have ability to exercise discrection and manage highly confidential and sensitive information.
  • Excellent problem solving, follow up, project management, and analytical skills required.
  • Must have a willingness to work flexible hours to meet the organization’s needs/demands.
  • Must be able to travel to either CRCH site (Brighton and Waltham) as needed.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, particularly with people from diverse cultures, with the ability to understand the community, population, and patients we serve.
  • Must believe in the work we do at CRCH, with a strong passion to serve underserved populations in diverse settings.
