Overview

The Assistant Director-Inspections oversees the operations of Inspections for the Permitting Division in the Department of Planning and Development. This role involves managing daily inspection activities, ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations, coordinating with other departments, and providing leadership and support to the inspection team. The Assistant Director plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety, functionality, and integrity of building structures within the jurisdiction. This position reports to the Deputy Director of Planning and Development-Permitting.

Key Responsibilities

1 Supervision and Management:

  • Assist in managing and supervising the inspection staff, including training, performance evaluations, and scheduling.
  • Provide guidance and support to inspection staff on complex inspection issues and code interpretations.
  • Ensure efficient workflow and high-quality inspection services.

2 Regulatory Compliance

  • Oversee the application and enforcement of local, state, and federal building codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Review and approve inspection reports, notices of violation, and compliance orders.
  • Stay updated on changes in building codes and regulations, and implement necessary adjustments within the department.

3 Inspection Operations

  • Coordinate and oversee daily inspection activities, ensuring timely and thorough inspections of construction projects.
  • Conduct field inspections as needed, particularly for complex or high-priority projects.
  • Develop and maintain inspection procedures and protocols to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.

4 Customer Service And Communication

  • Address and resolve complaints or disputes related to inspections and code compliance.
  • Communicate with builders, contractors, property owners, and other stakeholders to provide information and guidance on inspection-related matters.
  • Promote a customer-focused approach within the department.

5 Interdepartmental Coordination

  • Collaborate with other city departments, agencies, and stakeholders to facilitate project approvals and ensure cohesive service delivery.
  • Participate in interdepartmental meetings and committees as required.

6 Administrative Duties

  • Assist in preparing and managing the department’s budget, including monitoring expenditures and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and other documentation for senior management and regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in strategic planning and policy development for the Building Inspections Department.

7 Professional Development

  • Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and advancements in building inspection technology.
  • Pursue continuous professional development opportunities and encourage staff to do the same.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Design, or a related field.

Experience

1 Minimum of 8 years of experience in building inspections, construction management, planning, development, or a related field.

2 At least 4 years of supervisory or management experience.

Certifications

1 Valid Building Inspector Certification (e.g., ICC Certified Building Inspector) required (or obtained within 6 months of appointment).

2 Additional certifications in specialized inspection areas (e.g., electrical, plumbing, mechanical) are advantageous.

Working Conditions

1 Primarily office-based with regular field visits to construction sites.

2 May require occasional evening or weekend work to address urgent inspection issues or attend public meetings.

Salary Range

$114,154.16 – $142,692.70

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
