Position: Director of Finance

Reports to: CEO

Status: Full-time, non-exempt

Evergreen Habitat is searching for a dynamic and committed professional to serve as our Director of Finance. The Director of Finance is responsible for advancing the mission and vision of Habitat for Humanity by ensuring the financial integrity of the organization. This position is responsible for the overall financial policies and practices of the organization. The Director ensures accurate and timely reporting for all business activities and is responsible for compliance with generally accepted accounting principles as well as Federal, State and local tax compliance for a non-profit organization. This position is an engaged member of the leadership team and manages the finance staff.

Key components of this position include accounting, banking, reporting, budgeting and audit. This position also oversees payroll and human resources. The Director is a key position of the organization and works closely and collaboratively with all departments of the organization to advance the mission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Finance Responsibilities – 90%

  • Maintains responsibility for accounting and financial reporting, treasury and cash flow, budgeting, audit, tax, long-range forecasting, and insurance activities for the organization.
  • Supports the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and comparison of actual to budgeted results
  • Provides financial reporting and analysis to the CEO, COO, Senior Leadership team, Finance Committee and the Board of Directors.
  • Coordinates and attends all monthly Finance Committee meetings made up of staff and volunteers.
  • Coordinates with external auditors and manages the annual audit of the organization’s financial statements.
  • Coordinates preparation, review and timely filing of the organization’s annual Form 990 tax return.
  • Works with the Director of Grants and Resource Development to manage local, State and Federal grant reimbursements, compliance and reporting.
  • Works with the Finance and IT staff and software providers to provide computer applications necessary to maintain proper records and to afford adequate internal accounting controls.
  • Manages the annual budget process with the Senior Leadership Team
  • Provides monthly reviews of budget status with the Senior Leadership Team and the CEO.
  • Establishes and cultivates relationships with banks and other financial institutions; ensures compliance with loan covenants.
  • Manages Finance staff.
  • Maintains appropriate internal controls over financial transactions and reporting.
  • Analyzes current processes, recommends and implements improvements.
  • Prepares ad hoc analyses and/or miscellaneous financial reports as needed.
  • Oversees servicing of in-house mortgages.
  • Manages human resources, payroll and benefits
  • Interacts with Habitat for Humanity International as required
  • Other duties as assigned.

Leadership Team Responsibilities – 5%

  • Be an engaged team member participating with planning, implementation, and evaluation of new and existing programs
  • Ensure the leadership team understands the financial position of the organization

Habitat Engagement – 5%

  • Understand the Habitat history, mission and culture from a staff, volunteer and donor perspective
  • Be an engaged member of the organization by understanding and working effectively with other departments
  • Participate in staff meetings and training
  • Work to create an integrated and positive internal culture

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Dedication to and ability to articulate the mission and core values of Habitat for Humanity
  • Exemplary leadership and problem-solving skills, including addressing unexpected issues and emergencies
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, general ledger and accounting concepts
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and QuickBooks accounting software
  • High level of confidentiality, honesty, integrity, and self-awareness
  • Ability to work individually and as a member of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to positively interact across all levels of the organization, and with vendors and customers from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities with short deadlines and maintain attention to detail
  • Ability to work regular office hours, 9am – 5pm, with flexibility regarding peak-time work requirements
  • BS/BA in Accounting is preferred.
  • Active CPA license; public accounting experience desired
  • Prior experience with Federal, State and local grant administration and accounting preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a management role in Accounting or Finance
  • Not-for-profit and/or financial services experience a plus
  • Ability to pass a background check and credit check

General Work Schedule:

  • 40 hours/week; variable, includes evenings and weekends
  • Flexible work schedule including hybrid work from home opportunities
  • Current hours: 9am-5pm Monday- Friday

Occasional requirements are to move about the office to access file cabinets, office equipment, etc. Must be able to lift 25-50 lbs. Evening and weekend work may be required.

Salary and benefits: Salary: $70,000, dependent on experience and skills. Benefits include paid medical and dental insurance, paid holidays, retirement contributions, paid time off, and a flexible work schedule with hybrid work from home opportunities.
