Director of Lateral Success

Kilpatrick, a large international law firm, is seeking a Director of Lateral Success for our Atlanta, Chicago, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Washington, DC or New York office. This position will be part of our team of attorneys, paralegals and support staff providing a high level of service to both internal and external clients. The Director of Lateral Success will work with key stakeholders in leading and enhancing our Firmwide integration efforts for lateral attorneys and assist in realizing their business case. This role will be responsible for promoting a best-in-class integration program aimed at optimizing lateral attorney success and fostering seamless integration into the Firm to ensure their success. The position will serve as a dedicated resource focused on connecting new lateral attorneys to Firm resources and measuring and reporting on their success. The Director will work with Department and Team leadership to support the development of integration plans and prepare action items for lateral attorneys to support integration efforts.

Working with Department and Team leadership and the Lateral Success Committee, this position will identify specific integration needs and priorities and tailor a strategy to ensure that lateral attorney(s) receive the support necessary to become productive members of the Firm. This position reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Essential Job Functions

  • Work with the Lateral Success Committee and Department and Team leadership to design a structured Lateral Success Program that will include measurable milestones for integration, business development, and relationship-building to ensure full lateral integration into the Firm.
  • Standardize and implement a structured integration process with designated integration points of contact and tailored 12-month integration plans that address both operational and practice-specific needs.
  • Drive consistency in identifying and connecting laterals with new opportunities within the Firm through guided and customized networking initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with laterals and internal stakeholders including Department, Team, office, and operational leadership—to ensure effective coordination and communication for desired integration outcomes.
  • Collaborate with leadership, laterals, and business services professionals to identify integration needs and priorities and implement tailored strategies that position laterals for long-term success.
  • Lead and manage lateral integration plans to ensure progress toward defined goals.
  • Serve as the primary internal point of contact for laterals, connecting them to appropriate business functions and resources.
  • Collect regular feedback from laterals to identify best practices and areas for improvement in the integration process and experience.
  • Track and analyze performance data for lateral hires to identify trends, best practices, and areas of improvement.
  • Identify and escalate integration challenges to internal stakeholders and propose actionable solutions.
  • Use technology, tools, and processes to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of the Firm’s Lateral Integration program.
  • Work with the Marketing & Business Development team to facilitate integration opportunities, such as client action teams, cross-selling efforts, and other growth strategies.
  • Stay informed about current trends and innovations in lateral integration strategies and recommend improvements to existing processes.

Knowledge/Skills Required

  • Minimum 12+ years of experience in law firm operations, business development, and/or talent management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) preferred.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, high EQ, and maturity demonstrated success collaborating and leading in a consensus-driven, complex, organization; the ability to lead through influence rather than control, and to create consensus-based support for business strategies and decisions.
  • Be an energetic, forward-thinking, and creative individual with high ethical standards.
  • Strong business acumen, and analytic mindset; the ability to develop comprehensive short- and long-term integration plans from broadly stated objectives, anticipating and exceeding business needs, and managing conflicting priorities when necessary.
  • Capable of handling confidential information with sensitivity and discretion.
  • Ability to communicate integration information/program succinctly to all levels of personnel, including firm leaders and attorneys.
  • Must be able to rapidly analyze, judge, anticipate consequences, decide, initiate action, determine follow-through, and take corrective action.
  • Proven ability to build trust-based relationships with lawyers and business services professionals, and to work collaboratively across multiple functional areas.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels, maintain confidences, and address challenges diplomatically.
  • Strong relationship-building skills; team-oriented, dependable, and committed to fostering collaboration.
  • Demonstrated business acumen, technological proficiency, and strategic problem-solving skills.
  • In-depth understanding of law firm economics and key performance indicators.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, including urgent and time-sensitive matters, while maintaining high attention to detail.

This is a full-time, regular position with a multi-faceted health benefit package including medical, dental, and vision. The firm also offers life insurance, short term disability plans and retirement plans in addition to holidays and paid time off. The firm offers hybrid work schedules combining in office work days as well as remote work days. The pay range for this position in Atlanta and Chicago only is $192,600 to $289,000 annually; in Raleigh and Winston-Salem is $182,900 to 274,300 annually; and in Washington DC and New York is $231,500 to $347,300 annually.
