Director, Strategy & Finance – (Hybrid)

The Knopf Doubleday Group – a division of Penguin Random House – is seeking a detail-oriented self-starter to join our team as Director, Strategy & Finance. Reporting into the Vice President, Strategy & Finance, this role will manage a small team while collaborating daily with the larger publishing group. You will be responsible for managing the financial planning, reporting, and compliance functions of the division as well as providing strategic guidance and analysis to the senior management team.

You will also lead and mentor a team of finance professionals and ensure that the division adheres to the highest standards of financial integrity while driving growth and efficiency. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced, innovative, and motivated person who is looking to grow and have an impact on the company.

This position will be responsible for both day-to-day financial reporting as well as strategic projects:

  • Day-to-day:
  • Manage the financial planning and analysis processes, including forecasting, variance analysis, and scenario modeling. 
  • Prepare and present monthly financial performance and KPI reports to the senior management team. 
  • Analyze the key drivers of revenue and expenses, such as sales volume, pricing, cost of goods sold, operating expenses, and capital expenditures. 
  • Coordinate with Corporate Finance on both reporting and key projects
  • Improve reporting capabilities/visibility
  • Participate in title acquisitions
  • Participate in decisions regarding inventory, pricing, marketing, etc.
  • Strategic Projects:
  • Report results to Publishers and help guide decision-making
  • Identify, monitor, and communicate trends, risks, and opportunities in our business and the industry that may impact the financial performance of the division. 
  • Make concrete recommendations to upper management to impact business focus and profitability

Requirements: 

  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in finance, accounting, or audit, preferably in the publishing, media, or entertainment industry. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other financial software and tools (Power BI, Anaplan and SAP would be beneficial). 
  • A strategic thinker with excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills (both written and oral). 
  • Strong leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills with the ability to raise difficult issues, diplomatically
  • Experience managing a small team preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills, with an ability to work under pressure to multi-task and prioritize to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Strategic vision combined with attention to detail
  • Ability to take initiative and to work both independently and as part of a team

The salary range for this position is $140,000 – $150,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
