Purpose:
The Principal Scientist will apply their scientific expertise to design, execute, analyze and report research findings to advance R&D projects in a highly regulated Medical Device research facility. The candidate will manage and conduct microbiological research of a highly complex nature. They will exercise independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for multiple projects, while leading programs that ensure continuous improvement in the development of new methods, processes, and procedures. Serves as an authority in the scientific field, exhibits leadership during audits, and serves as laboratory operations manager.
You will be responsible for:
- Designing, managing and conducting complex microbiology assessments for new product development, and front end innovation of combination products, including sample and process management.
- Serving as technical expert in microbiological and biological safety areas, evaluating technical and regulatory requirements against business needs in the development of new products with antimicrobial or other microbiological qualities and attributes.
- Establishing partnerships and leading engagements with internal and external stakeholders and strategic partners. Collaborating with internal associates and external partners to further Ethicon’s research programs and grow capabilities in understanding and producing antimicrobial products.
- Building and executing in-depth microbiology testing roadmaps for multiple complex projects and programs that advance new product development and explore novel claims and technology opportunities in the medical device industry. Developing and implementing microbiology test method validation policies and procedures.
- Training lab associates on new or advanced techniques, and author/present manuscripts, posters, or other professional publications as appropriate.
- Representing ETHICON on domestic and international industry committees, providing technical guidance and consultation to working groups, plants and other J&J companies
- Managing project budgets and overseeing lab operations for a BSL-2 Microbiology lab facility.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Minimum of B.S. in a Life Science or Engineering with specific course work in Microbiology.
- 8+ years (with Master’s Degree) or 10 +years (with Bachelor’s Degree) microbiology work experience, including at least 5 years direct experience with medical device industry
- Subject matter expert on routine and applied GxP-compliant research methodologies in a medical device BSL 2 microbiology laboratory setting.
- Laboratory experience executing and managing routine microbiological lab assays such as MIC, time kill, bacterial growth promotion, AET/preservative efficacy testing.
- Expertise in internal and external laboratory audits.
Preferred:
- PhD preferred
- Lab management experience
Other:
- This position is a lab-based, full time onsite, 5 days a week in Raritan, NJ
- Ability to travel up to 10%, domestic and international

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
$115,000-$180,000
Additional Description for Pay Transparency:
The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
