We are hiring multiple roles across the Product and Design teams at Amazon in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. In this role, you will collaborate with senior stakeholders from Design, Product, and Marketing teams to shape product strategies and translate them into compelling creative assets and impactful visual experiences. This role requires strong visual and interaction expertise, experienced design practice, particularly in ambiguous environments where problems need to be discovered and defined. As a Principal Product Designer, you’ll be a key driver in shaping the future of our products. You’ll lead strategic design initiatives that directly impact our user experience, business growth, and product innovation. This role offers the opportunity to influence product direction at scale while mentoring the next generation of design talent.

Key job responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Define and execute long-term design strategy aligned with business objectives
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and lead exploratory design initiatives
  • Drive design thinking methodology across the organization
  • Establish and evolve design standards and best practices
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration with Product, Engineering, and Marketing teams

Design Excellence

  • Own end-to-end design process for major product initiatives
  • Create comprehensive design systems that scale
  • Develop user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes
  • Ensure consistent, high-quality design implementation
  • Pioneer new interaction patterns and visual frameworks

Research & Innovation

  • Partner with research teams to gather actionable insights
  • Conduct competitive analysis and market research
  • Apply data analytics to inform design decisions
  • Explore emerging technologies and their design implications
  • Lead design sprints and innovation workshops

Team Leadership

  • Mentor and develop junior designers
  • Foster a culture of design excellence and innovation
  • Lead design reviews and provide constructive feedback
  • Build and maintain design team processes
  • Collaborate with recruitment to grow the design team

Basic Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • 10+ years of product design experience
  • Portfolio demonstrating complex problem-solving
  • Track record of shipping successful digital products
  • Experience leading design teams or major initiatives
  • History of cross-functional collaboration

Technical Skills

  • Expert knowledge of UI/UX design principles
  • Proficiency in design and prototyping tools
  • Understanding of technical constraints and possibilities
  • Experience with design systems and pattern libraries
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards

Leadership Skills

  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to influence without authority
  • Experience mentoring and developing others
  • Track record of driving innovation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Design, HCI, or related field
  • Experience with emerging technologies (AR/VR, AI/ML)

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $147,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $244,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
