The Program Director provides day-to-day management and oversight of program operations within the Mental Health Equity Research Group of the Mount Sinai Institute for Health Equity Research (IHER). Working closely with the research group director develops and implements mental health programs , community-based educational and training programs, and provides strategic direction and support.
The candidate must: (1) have direct experience facilitating evidence-based mental health literacy interventions in faith-based and other community settings as part of federally funding research studies for adults and/or youth; (2) have expertise developing and testing trainings protocols for peer interventionists (e.g., Community Health Workers); (3) have at least one publication in a peer-reviewed psychiatric journal with qualitative data (e.g., interviews); and (4) be certified as a National Instructor of the following trainings:
- L.E.T.S Talk, L.E.T.S Save Lives Suicide Prevention Program, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)
- Soul Shop Suicide Prevention Training Series, Soul Shop Movement
- Adult & Youth Mental Health First Aide Training, National Council of Mental Wellbeing
In addition, the candidate must have experience with REDCap, developing and leading Community Advisory Boards, strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, demonstrated experience with group facilitation, and be comfortable discussing mental health topics including suicide. They must have a solid understanding of the social, economic, and political factors that contribute to treatment gaps in under-resourced communities.
Responsibilities
- Oversees and manages the activities of assigned program(s) and consultants and provides leadership and direction for staff (generally, Program Coordinators and/or Managers, Community health workers, and related administrative staff), setting an effective agenda to ensure that performance goals are met.
- Develops and independently implements program goals, strategies and objectives to sustain and grow programs and services, including training protocols for peer interventions in community settings
- Performs needs assessments and analyzes and studies participant, member and community needs (if applicable), for basis of program development.
- Develops and schedules a program work plan in accordance with specifications, objectives and funding limitations; oversees daily operations and coordinates program activities through assigned staff; prioritizes and delegates work activities.
- Prepares budget proposals and recommendations and establishes a budget control system for controlling expenditures; controls expenditures in accordance with budget allocations; recommends equipment and resources for program.
- Prepares proposals for corporate and foundation funding and/or funding continuation from outside sponsors/donors.
- Represents the Program to the public, key stakeholders, and other interested parties.
- Confers with and advises staff and others to provide technical advice, problem solving assistance, answers to questions and program goals and policy interpretations; refers to appropriate department or person when unable to respond.
- Prepares periodic reports, financial statements and records on program activities, progress, status or other special reports for management or outside agencies/funders.
- Evaluates program effectiveness to develop and implement improved methods; devises evaluation methodology and implements; analyzes results and takes appropriate action.
- Reviews applications or other program documents to determine acceptance or make decisions pertaining to program.
- May facilitate workshops in community settings, and recruit program participants, members and volunteers utilizing the most appropriate promotional or marketing methods such as individual letters, brochures or presentations at meetings.
- Drives the development and creation of communications and promotional literature for distribution (newsletters, brochures or flyers); coordinates entire process to completion.
- Develops and facilitates workshops, meetings or conferences with high impact on program and/or participants – logistics, scheduling and participant communications.
- Interacts and maintains liaison with students, faculty, staff and outside/community agencies or committees in facilitating program objectives.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree required, Masters preferred, or equivalent combination or relevant work experience and education.
- 7 years related experience
- Be knowledgeable and experienced working with faith-based, urban, and African American communities
- Experience working with youth sports leagues, with preference for basketball teams, Boys & Girls Clubs, and other community-based agencies focused on youth
- Have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills; and the ability to adapt communication styles
- Be experienced and comfortable working with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
- Be familiar with the socio-cultural factors that contribute to health disparities
- Have experience engaging people virtually and in-person
- Have knowledge and experience with social media platforms and websites
- Treat fellow community members with professional courtesy, patience, and respect
- Be certified as a National Instructor of the following trainings:

Compensation
The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $115543.88 – $180722.75 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
